Child shot in Olympic National Forest

The Mason County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a shooting that injured a child Sunday morning. A suspect has been detained.

MASON COUNTY, Wash. — The Mason County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a shooting that left a child injured Sunday morning. 

The sheriff’s office said dispatchers received a call at around 3:30 a.m. from a driver reporting his vehicle had been shot at while traveling in the Olympic National Forest near Forest Service Road 23 and Spider Lake. 

The caller told authorities his child had been struck by a bullet and that he was driving to Mason General Hospital for help. Deputies contacted the family at the hospital and confirmed the shooting location. 

The injured child was later airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle for further treatment. Officials have not released the child’s condition. 

Investigators said deputies located individuals connected to the shooting in the area and detained a suspect, who was booked into the Mason County Jail on a first-degree assault charge. Detectives continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting. 

Officials said there is no ongoing threat to the community.
