Court records say the driver got out and ran after the pickup was boxed in by Seattle officers.
SEATTLE — A Seattle man has been charged after prosecutors say he drove a stolen pickup truck into two Seattle police vehicles and then tried to run from officers in South Seattle.
King County prosecutors charged Randy James Monsegur with possession of a stolen vehicle, attempting to elude a pursuing police vehicle, second-degree malicious mischief and obstructing a law enforcement officer.
The incident happened April 10 near Ninth Avenue South and South Dakota Street, according to court documents.
Police said officers spotted a red 2007 Ford Ranger that had been reported stolen two days earlier.
According to court documents, an officer in a marked patrol car activated lights and sirens, and saw the truck slow briefly before it hit the patrol vehicle head-on.
Court documents say the truck then backed into a second patrol vehicle and hit the first one again.
Prosecutors wrote that the driver kept pressing the accelerator for a long period of time, creating smoke and damaging multiple patrol cars.
Police said Monsegur then got out of the truck and ran before officers caught him and took him into custody.
According to court documents, officers said he later told police he got the truck from a friend and ran because he knew it was stolen and did not want to go to jail.
Court records say officers found no key in the ignition and saw a noticeable gap between the ignition and steering column.
Police said the truck’s condition would have made it obvious to anyone driving it that it was likely stolen.
Neither of the two officers involved was injured.
In asking for $75,000 bail, prosecutors said Monsegur has a pending King County case involving possession of a stolen vehicle and obstructing a law enforcement officer.
They also wrote that courts have issued 37 warrants for his arrest since 2009.
