Seattle’s iconic Space Needle now sports a soccer ball design as the city gears up to host FIFA World Cup 2026 matches, showcasing its role in the global event.
SEATTLE — Seattle’s most recognizable landmark has taken on a new look as the city prepares to host matches during FIFA World Cup 2026.
On Thursday, officials with Seattle FIFA World Cup 26 and the Space Needle unveiled a redesigned roof atop the landmark, turning it into the appearance of a massive soccer ball overlooking the city skyline.
Organizers said the concept was created as part of an effort to welcome fans from around the world and highlight Seattle’s role as one of the tournament’s host cities. The design was developed after discussions about how to create a visual display unlike anything visitors had previously seen in Seattle.
The installation was completed through a partnership between the Space Needle and SeattleFWC26, with Seattle-based Long Painting Company carrying out the work. Crews applied the custom pattern while working 605 feet above Seattle Center.
“With just days until the world arrives in Seattle, this activation captures the energy building across our region,” SeattleFWC26 CEO Peter Tomozawa said.
Officials said the project required detailed planning, specialized equipment and coordination with Space Needle staff to safely complete the transformation while monitoring weather conditions.
The modified roof is expected to remain a focal point of Seattle’s World Cup celebrations as the city prepares to host six FIFA World Cup 2026 matches. Organizers said the tournament is expected to draw hundreds of thousands of visitors to the region and attract billions of viewers worldwide.
Seattle is one of 16 cities across North America selected to host matches during FIFA World Cup 2026, which officials describe as the largest tournament in the event’s history.
