
A driver accidentally accelerated while parking and crashed into the Emerald Court Apartments in Des Moines on Saturday night, officials said.
DES MOINES, Wash. — A vehicle crashed into an apartment building in Des Moines Saturday night, displacing several residents but causing no injuries.
Officers with the Des Moines Police Department responded to Emerald Court Apartments shortly after 9 p.m. on May 30 after receiving reports that a vehicle had struck the building.
Investigators determined the driver accidentally accelerated while attempting to park, causing significant damage to the structure. Police said there were no signs of impairment and no injuries were reported.
The crash affected four apartment units, displacing eight adults and one child.
The American Red Cross deployed Disaster Action Team volunteers to the scene to provide emergency assistance, including evaluating immediate needs for shelter, food and clothing.
Multiple apartment units have been secured while the City of Des Moines engineering division conducts a structural assessment of the building. The structural assessment will help determine when displaced residents can safely return to their homes.
