A 5-year-old girl and a 2-year-old boy were hospitalized after separate accidental falls from Tacoma apartment windows Thursday.

TACOMA, Wash. — Two young children survived falls from separate third-story apartment windows in Tacoma on Thursday, according to police and fire officials.

A 5-year-old girl fell from a third-story apartment window in the 3600 block of South G Street, officials said. Tacoma Fire Department crews took her to a hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening.

In a separate incident, a 2-year-old boy fell from a third-story apartment window in the 6400 block of 53rd Avenue East. He was also taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Police said both falls were accidental. Both children are expected to survive, officials said.

The incidents come as warmer weather can lead families to open windows in their homes.

MultiCare Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital in Tacoma treats an average of 33 children each year for window falls.

More than 25% of the children treated by Mary Bridge for window falls come from five Pierce County ZIP codes, including three within Central Pierce Fire & Rescue’s service area.

Window stops are designed to keep windows from opening wide enough for a child to fall through while still allowing airflow.

Central Pierce Fire & Rescue and Mary Bridge have partnered to provide free window stops to local families.
