Over two dozen new sidewalks coming to Pinehurst

The projects are funded through the Seattle Transportation Levy.

SEATTLE — Pinehurst will be the first neighborhood in Seattle to receive brand-new sidewalks, as part of a citywide project to accelerate sidewalk improvements.

The Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) plans to build 28 blocks of sidewalk throughout the north Seattle neighborhood, starting in June 2026, per a blog post by the agency. The city aims add to 250 blocks of walkways by 2029.

“For Pinehurst residents, this means imagining a neighborhood where walking to school doesn’t require stepping into the street, the trip to the bus stop feels easier in the rain, and where neighbors can move around more freely and confidently,” wrote Christa Dumpys, SDOT outreach staff. “These improvements will help shape a safer, more connected community — one where everyday trips feel a little more welcoming.”

Pinehurst is just the start.

In 2025, Seattle residents provided input to SDOT on neighborhoods that could best use new pedestrian infrastructure through community outreach sessions — or “walkshops,” per SDOT.

In addition to Pinehurst, residents in Northgate, North Delridge, Highland Park, South Delridge, Hillman City, South Park, Little Brook, Cedar Park and Arbor Heights shared their top priority areas with SDOT staffers.

Transportation staff chose routes for new sidewalks based on community feedback, existing and missing sidewalks in a neighborhood, the Seattle Transportation Plan and Safe Routes to School data.

SDOT also launched an interactive map of potential sites for new sidewalks on its website, which can be viewed here.

About a quarter of Seattle streets are missing sidewalks, per city data, and at least nine pedestrians were killed in collisions in North Seattle between Jan. 202 and Mar. 2023, per state transportation agency collision databases.
