OLYMPIA, Wash. — Deputies are investigating an “active shooting involving law enforcement” off Hoffman Road in Olympia that killed a suspect, according to the Thurston County Sheriff’s Office.
Sheriff Derek Sanders said the department was involved in “an officer-involved shooting” after a vehicle reportedly sped 90 MPH in a 35 MPH zone on Yelm Way Southeast. After a chase, the sheriff’s office said a suspect and deputy crashed near Morse Merryman Road Southeast.
“The suspect fled on foot, and deputies heard shots being fired in a back yard. Deputies pursued the suspect on foot when shots were fired, and the suspect was struck by gunfire,” Sanders said, adding that the suspect did not survive after medics rendered aid.
No deputies were injured, according to Sanders.

Nearby schools were also impacted. The Margaret McKenny Elementary School was placed on lockdown, though most students had already been dismissed. Officials said two buses remained on campus, and the lockdown was lifted as of 4:30 p.m.
The Region 3 Critical Investigation Team and the Office of Independent Investigation (OII) will lead an investigation, according to Sanders. OII spokesperson Hector Castro confirmed that deadly force was used and that it had responded to the incident.
