KING COUNTY, Wash. — The man convicted of a violent 2022 carjacking spree in King County was sentenced to 27 years in prison on Monday.
Maar Teng Rambang was convicted in January of three counts of carjacking and three counts of using a firearm during a violent crime.
During the sentencing hearing, U.S. District Court Judge John Chun called the crimes Rambang was convicted of “serious” and “terrible.” The carjacking spree on Nov. 7, 2022, resulted in physical injury to one victim and lasting psychological damage to all three, according to the court.
“This defendant violently threatened two people and shot a third and then drove at a high rate of speed recklessly throughout King County,” said First Assistant U.S. Attorney Neil Floyd. “It is just by luck that no one was killed in this crime spree. The mandatory minimum sentenced for this crime means this 27-year sentence is required and appropriate for this dangerous, violent conduct.”
Shortly before noon on the day of the crime spree, Rambang ordered a woman out of her car at gunpoint outside the Kent East Hill Post Office, according to charging documents. He drove the car to the Bellevue Square Mall garage.
At the garage, he fired his gun while threatening another woman, demanding her vehicle.
He drove the stolen BMW to Redmond, where he attempted to rob Amazon employees working at the delivery locker at Whole Foods.
Rambang then drove the BMW to Seattle’s Eastlake neighborhood, where he shot a man in the leg and stole his Jeep.
Rambang drove the stolen Jeep back to Kent.
When police officers attempted to stop him, he fled at speeds of up to 100 mph. After reckless driving that included driving the wrong way in traffic and running red lights, officers in Renton blocked the vehicle and arrested him, according to charging documents.
Following his prison term, Rambang will be on three years of supervised release.
