PIERCE COUNTY, Wash. — A suspected DUI incident in Pierce County escalated into a high-speed chase, property damage, and a tense standoff before deputies were able to make an arrest Thursday, police said.
According to the Pierce County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were initially dispatched around 5 a.m. for a welfare check on a man reported to be stumbling along the sidewalk in the 15600 block of Canyon Road East. When deputies arrived, they learned the man’s vehicle was in the process of being towed.
As a deputy approached, the man reportedly ran to his vehicle, got inside, and sped away from the scene. Based on the deputy’s observations, probable cause for DUI was established. The deputy caught up with the vehicle near 144th Street East and attempted a traffic stop. The driver briefly pulled over before taking off again, prompting a pursuit.
During the chase, police said the suspect drove down a residential dead-end street and cut through a yard to turn around, damaging a fence in the process. Deputies ultimately terminated the pursuit due to heavy traffic and concerns for the safety of early morning commuters.
Investigators later identified the suspect and located his home, where his vehicle was found parked in the driveway. Deputies responded and spent about 45 minutes outside the residence obtaining a seizure of persons warrant. During that time, the suspect repeatedly came to the door, told deputies to leave, and went back inside.
On his third time exiting the home, deputies were able to take him into custody without further incident.
Police said an open container of Coors Light was visible inside the vehicle, according to the sheriff’s office. The 33-year-old man was booked into jail on multiple charges, including DUI, felony eluding, obstructing, resisting arrest, and second-degree malicious mischief for the fence damage.
