According to police, one person was injured by gunfire on Thursday morning.

SEATTLE — A person was shot early Thursday morning in Seattle’s Chinatown-International District, according to the Seattle Police Department.

At about 6:20 a.m., Seattle police and fire responded to reports of a shooting in the 400 block of Maynard Avenue South.

Arriving officers reportedly found a man, 37, in an alleyway with a gunshot wound to his leg near Hing Hay Park. The victim was transported to the hospital in stable condition.

Police said an altercation between the victim and a suspect occurred before the shooting. The suspect fled the scene before police arrived.

Several hours later, the park was filled with longtime residents who frequently use the space to play board games and ping pong.

“It gives me hope… I have faith, but I need tenacity to kind of stand up and make more of a voice, more of a squawk,” said Kane-E Rosman, who has lived in the area for about 13 years. “There’s no perfect place to live. You have to make the best of it wherever you’re at.”

Rosman worries about the impact of violence on the many small businesses in the neighborhood, who may suffer losses due to fewer visitors.

“We all live in a world that’s not perfect, but we want to make sure that we can take care of ourselves so we can give the best of ourselves to other people,” he said.

Rosman wants to see community organizations better funded and empowered.

“Making sure that people really know that they can actually make a bit of an active difference with a group of people,” he said. “We’re not just our individual self. We can have a lot of say when we’re in the power of being in a group.”

Seattle police are still investigating what led to the altercation and identifying a suspect.
