A double amputee stuck in a beach hammock during high tide was rescued by Washington State Ferries and Kitsap County deputies.

KINGSTON, Wash. — First responders rescued a man in a hammock who got trapped in high tide near Kingston on Tuesday night.

A 55-year-old man had tied his hammock to logs on the beach and got stuck when the tide came in.

Washington State Ferries staff members at the Kingston ferry terminal heard him calling for help around 10:30 p.m. and saw a flashing light in the water.

Kitsap County Sheriff’s Office deputies on patrol searched for the man, walking through “heavy brush” to reach him.

The man is a double amputee and was unable to put on his prosthetic legs, the sheriff’s office said.

Deputies carried the man to the beach, where a state ferries rescue crew in a lifeboat met up with them. Crew members took the man and the deputies to the Walla Walla ferry vessel, which was approaching the Kingston terminal. On the boat, North Kitsap Fire and Rescue provided medical aid.

“Cases like this show the importance of cross agency collaboration and regular rescue training,” state ferries said in a Facebook post.

Just last month, Washington State Ferries was involved in another rescue near Kingston. On March 16, the crew on the Walla Walla ferry rescued the occupants of a small sailboat that had capsized.
