Two lanes of Tacoma Narrows Bridge closed for emergency repairs

Two westbound lanes on the Tacoma Narrows Bridge are closed as crews make emergency repairs after damage was found to the bridge.

TACOMA, Wash. — Two westbound lanes of the Tacoma Narrows Bridge are closed after crews found damage to the bridge on Wednesday, according to the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT).

While making other repairs, crews discovered “deterioration” on a structure supporting the joint under the two right lanes of traffic on the westbound side. The two right lanes will remain closed around the clock and possibly through the weekend, WSDOT said.

The two left lanes of westbound traffic remain open and safe to drive over.

Officials are asking travelers to limit their travel over the bridge and to slow down when near road construction sites.

The HOV lane is open to all drivers while the road closures are in place. The bridge on-ramp from Jackson Avenue to westbound state Route 16 is closed.

The Tacoma Narrows Bridge as it stands today is 76 years old, built in 1950. The bridge has had eight emergency repairs between 2024 to 2025, all of which were related to bridge joints, WSDOT said.
