Deputies said two men ran from a stolen truck near JBLM after a chase that included chainsaws and climbing gear thrown at patrol cars.
PARKLAND, Wash. — A man is facing charges after Pierce County deputies say a stolen truck reported in Parkland led officers on a late-night chase that stretched onto Interstate 5, where chainsaws and other gear were thrown from the vehicle before it came to a stop near Joint Base Lewis-McChord, according to the Pierce County Sheriff’s Office and court records.
At about 11:50 p.m. on April 19 a woman reported her silver 2006 Ford F-250 had just been stolen from the Lakeshore Apartments in the 9700 block of 18th Avenue Court South in Parkland.
Deputies said the truck was found about 13 minutes later near 104th Street South and Ainsworth Avenue South, still in the same general area where it had been taken.
Deputies said the driver sped away when a traffic stop was attempted, setting off a chase through South Tacoma streets, onto state Route 512 and then I-5.
One deputy wrote that speeds reached as high as 100 mph on the freeway before the truck exited near the Joint Base Lewis-McChord logistics gate.
During the chase, deputies said the passenger threw multiple items out of the truck’s passenger-side window, including multiple chainsaws, a metal chain and climbing gear.
One deputy wrote that he had to make a quick move to avoid one of the chainsaws on I-5, while another said a chainsaw thrown toward a patrol vehicle could have caused a serious crash.
A Washington State Patrol vehicle was also damaged after hitting one of the chainsaws, according to a sheriff’s deputy report.
The chase ended after the truck left the road by the JBLM logistics gate and got stuck in brush and trees, according to deputies.
Both men got out and ran.
Deputies used a K9 and a drone during the search, and the passenger was found in thick brush.
Deputies said he was taken to a hospital for a dog bite before being booked into jail.
The driver, later identified as Dominique Faatofutumasaaa Daniel, was found a short time later by JBLM military police after deputies said he climbed a fence onto base property.
Daniel was charged with second-degree assault, unlawful possession of a stolen vehicle, attempting to elude a pursuing police vehicle and obstructing a law enforcement officer.
The charging papers say the assault allegation involved a deadly weapon.
Sheriff’s office notes included with the case say the passenger told deputies he had thrown the chainsaws from the truck window.
The sheriff’s office said he was expected to face charges tied to the stolen truck, the chase and the items thrown at deputies.
