BELLEVUE, Wash. — An organization that started with passion at a kitchen table and built on the idea of belonging is now inviting the wider community to celebrate its growth and mission at an upcoming gala, “Under One Sky,” on the Eastside.

Founded by Ginger Kwan, the organization – Open Doors for Multicultural Families – supports individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families, with a strong focus on serving diverse cultural communities.

What began as a small, community-centered effort has grown into a team of about 50 staff members who collectively speak more than 24 languages and serve people from more than 30 cultural backgrounds.

That diversity is intentional.

Leaders say the organization was designed so staff reflect the communities they serve, creating a culturally responsive approach that helps families navigate complex systems while feeling seen and supported.

The group’s work spans cultural navigation and brokerage, youth transition programs, caregiver support, and early learning initiatives. Leaders are also looking ahead to expand services through a “multicultural village” concept, including an early learning center and a family day center tied to a larger affordable housing project near the Kent-Des Moines station.

The housing development, in partnership with Mercy Housing, will include 233 units, with 47 designated for individuals with developmental disabilities and their families. Plans also emphasize multigenerational living, aiming to strengthen family and community ties.

To support these efforts, the organization is hosting the “Under One Sky Gala” at Bellevue College. The event will celebrate the communities served while raising funds for ongoing programs and future expansion.

Attendees can expect a vibrant, culturally rich evening.

Organizers say the gala will feature live performances, including a drumming group, and a “night market” atmosphere with multiple global cuisines. Catering support is being provided in part by Project Feast, known for highlighting immigrant and refugee chefs.

Beyond entertainment, the event is meant to bring people together across cultures and experiences — mirroring the organization’s core mission.

Organizers say the goal is to create a space where community members can gather, celebrate diversity, and invest in programs that help families thrive.
