Shorewood High School musicians to compete at renowned NYC jazz competition for first time in 17 years

Three Shorewood High School Jazz Band members stopped by the KING 5 studios before heading off to NYC to compete in Essentially Ellington.

SHORELINE, Wash. — A local group of student musicians is heading to one of the most prestigious jazz competitions in the country.

The Shorewood High School Jazz Band is making its first trip to the Essentially Ellington competition in New York City since 2008. 

The group will travel April 30 through May 2, joining two other Washington state bands also vying for recognition at the well-known annual event. Both Mountlake Terrace High School and Bothell High School are sending groups for separate competition dates.

Band members Marcus Torzillo, Oscar Clingenpeel and Zayne Cornelius stopped by the KING 5 studios and spoke about what the opportunity means to them ahead of their departure.

The students shared their excitement about performing together and reflected on the impact that studying jazz has had on them as musicians.

KING 5 wishes all three jazz groups the best of luck as they take the stage in New York.
