A fatal collision on U.S. 2 near Monroe left three dead and one seriously injured.

SEATTLE — A deadly two-vehicle collision shut down a stretch of U.S. 2 near Monroe for several hours Friday night as investigators worked at the scene.

According to authorities, the collision occurred near Sofie Road at milepost 18 just after midnight. A 26-year-old man, identified as the driver of the westbound vehicle, was killed. A 33-year-old woman driving the eastbound vehicle and her 33-year-old male passenger also died. One other person, in the westbound vehicle, was injured and transported to the hospital.

Investigators say the westbound vehicle attempted to pass an uninvolved vehicle, crossed into the eastbound lane and struck the oncoming car. The westbound vehicle came to rest on the westbound shoulder, while the eastbound vehicle stopped on the eastbound shoulder.

The Washington State Patrol closed lanes in the area for hours while troopers investigated the cause of the collision.

All lanes have since reopened following the extended closure. The investigation remains ongoing.
