The Pierce County Sheriff’s Office asks drivers to avoid Spanaway Loop Road near Military Road South due to a “horrific accident.”

SPANAWAY, Wash. — The Pierce County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO) is investigating a “horrific accident” after a 21-year-old man was hit and killed in Spanaway while attempting to cross traffic.

The collision happened around 4:40 p.m. along Spanaway Loop Road on Friday. The roadway between Military Road South to 174th Street South is closed in both directions; drivers are asked to find alternate routes.

While authorities initially described the incident as a juvenile pedestrian vs. vehicle collision, officials said the victim was a 21-year-old man who died at the scene.

He was attempting to cross the road during heavy traffic when he was struck by a car driving north in the center turn lane, according to PCSO public information officer Carly Cappetto.

While the man believed he was safe to cross, “he did not see that vehicle traveling in that center turn lane,” Cappetto said.

The causing driver remained at the scene and no arrests will be made, as Cappetto called the incident a “horrific accident.” She added that the driver had no signs of impairment.

Spanaway Loop Road has long been a frustration for residents, drivers and law enforcement, she said. With morning and evening traffic, the roadway becomes dangerous due to the amount of drivers and speeding.

“It could use a significant amount of enforcement and the manpower we have right now does not allow that,” she said.

This is breaking news, check back for updates.
