The Northshore School Board voted to remove its only school resource officer, ending a 30-year program at Bothell High School.
BOTHELL, Wash. — The Northshore School Board voted to eliminate the only school resource officer in the district on Monday night.
The program has been in place at Bothell High School for over 30 years.
A school resource officer’s (SRO) role is to create “positive relationships between police officers, students, and staff while promoting a safe and welcoming school environment,” according to the City of Bothell website. Bothell police say the officer has helped teens dealing with abuse in relationships and at home.
The current SRO was selected to serve Bothell High School in 2017, the website states.
But opponents of the program argue that an armed officer on campus makes some students feel unsafe.
The resource officer position will be eliminated starting next school year.
By law, the Northshore School Board was required to annually review the SRO agreement. In 2025, two members voted to eliminate the position for the first time.
