TACOMA, Wash. — A driver was killed in a single-vehicle crash Friday that knocked out power to nearby homes and Elmhurst Elementary School, according to the Pierce County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies responded around 7:10 a.m. to the crash in the 600 block of 138th Street East.

Investigators said the vehicle was heading west on 138th Street East at a high speed when the driver crossed into the eastbound lanes to pass another vehicle.

The driver then tried to move back into the westbound lane but lost control, according to the sheriff’s office.

The vehicle hit a utility pole hard enough to dislodge the engine, then rolled and struck a parked vehicle, deputies said.

The driver was thrown about 40 feet from the vehicle and died at the scene.

No other people were in the vehicle, and no other injuries were reported.

The crash left many homes without power, including Elmhurst Elementary School.

The school was delayed, and the sheriff’s office said it was not known when power would be restored.
