
Troopers said the horse and rider stepped into the road before they were hit west of Ellensburg.
ELLENSBURG, Wash. — A woman was flown to Harborview Medical Center after she and the horse she was riding were hit by a car Tuesday west of Ellensburg, according to Washington State Patrol.
The crash happened at about 5:40 p.m. on state Route 10 near milepost 102, about 5 miles west of the Ellensburg city limits in Kittitas County.
Troopers said the rider was riding west on state Route 10 when she and the horse stepped into the road.
An eastbound 2007 Subaru Legacy then hit the horse and rider, according to WSP.
The rider was injured and taken by medical helicopter to Harborview Medical Center.
The driver was not hurt. WSP said she was wearing a seat belt.
The horse was severely injured and was put down, according to the Washington State Patrol.
The Subaru had reportable damage but was driven from the scene, according to the press memo.
Troopers said drugs or alcohol were not involved.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
