TACOMA, Wash. — A dog in the care of the Tacoma Humane Society killed another dog during the Tacoma City Marathon on Sunday, prompting an internal review and the euthanizing of the dog involved.
In a statement, the Tacoma Humane Society called the incident “tragic” and said it resulted in the death of a community member’s dog.
“We are so deeply sorry for the harm this caused and the pain felt by those affected,” the organization said.
The humane society said it is taking “full responsibility” for understanding how the incident happened and for addressing any failures in “processes, oversight, or safeguards.”
According to the organization, the dog involved was classified as dangerous following an initial review conducted with local Animal Control. The dog was later humanely euthanized in accordance with applicable regulations.
The Tacoma Humane Society said it is now conducting a full review of its event protocols, including how dogs are selected and managed during off-site events.
Officials said they remain in contact with the affected family, along with staff, volunteers and event organizers.
