STEILACOOM, Wash. — New video shows a speeding boat veering toward a ferry, then crashing into rocks near the Steilacoom Ferry Dock on May 1. Now, a 21-year-old man is in jail on suspicion of driving under the influence.
Last Friday, the Pierce County Sheriff’s Office Marine Services Unit responded to a boat crash around 5 p.m. at the Steilacoom waterfront.
Video from the sheriff’s department shows the boat seemingly without an operator, speeding close to a ferry, angling toward another, then running into a rock embankment. Witnesses told police that the boat driver was passed out.

The boat came to a vertical stop against the rocks, ejecting the only occupant into the water.
When deputies arrived, first responders found a 21-year-old man at the scene. Deputies also said they found alcohol bottles inside the boat and that the man smelled like alcohol.
He was taken into custody for DUI.
