Seattle Kraken to build new iceplex, community center in Kirkland

The City of Kirkland and Seattle Kraken are partnering to build a new iceplex and community center.

KIRKLAND, Wash. — The City of Kirkland and Seattle Kraken announced Wednesday that it is moving forward with a public-private partnership to build a new Kraken Iceplex and Kirkland Community Center.

The project stems from city council approval of Resolution R-5704 in December, which authorized the partnership with the Seattle Kraken. The team is now working to secure the financing needed to construct the facility.

Plans for the development include two NHL-regulation ice rinks, a city-operated community center, a full-service public restaurant, a team store, and space for community programs, events, and activities. Officials say the project is designed to create a year-round destination that combines recreation, economic activity, and public amenities without adding new taxes.

Under the agreement, the city will retain protections throughout the partnership and assume ownership of the facility at the end of a 34-year lease.

City leaders say the development will expand recreation access by creating what would become Kirkland’s largest community center, featuring flexible program rooms and fitness space. Residents will be eligible for two hours of free open skate each month, and discounted programming will be offered for low-income and vulnerable populations through the One Roof Foundation. The site is also expected to host community events, youth programs, and seasonal activities year-round, along with adding a full-service restaurant in an area with limited dining options.

Economically, the project is estimated to generate $7 million annually for Kirkland and the surrounding Eastside, while creating local jobs and drawing visitors to nearby businesses. Officials say it could also help spur future development in the Northeast 85th Street station area as part of a broader vision for a walkable, transit-oriented district.

Construction is expected to begin in late spring 2026, following the closure of the temporary Houghton Park and Ride and play area in May. The Kraken Iceplex and community center are slated to open in fall 2027.
