Feeling pain at the pump? Gas prices are the highest they have ever been in Seattle.

SEATTLE — Gas prices hit a new record in several western Washington metro areas Tuesday as oil prices climbed and talks between the U.S. and Iran stalled.

The average price for a regular unleaded gallon of gas in Seattle, Bellevue and Everett on Tuesday was $5.72, which is an all-time high, according to AAA. This surpasses the previous record set in June 2022. The price is up 11 cents from a week ago and up 19 cents from a month ago.

Bremerton and Tacoma also hit new record highs Tuesday, recording an average price of $5.60 and $5.64 per gallon, respectively.

The average price across Washington state is slightly lower at $5.51 per gallon and hasn’t yet reached the record high of $5.55 per gallon, which was recorded June 16, 2022.

Gas prices have risen nationally over the last week as uncertainty remains around whether oil will be able to make it out of the Strait of Hormuz. Talks between the U.S. and Iran have also stalled, leading markets to react.

The price of a barrel of WTI crude oil rose to $95.94 on Monday, up over $7 from the previous week. Brent crude was $106.98 per barrel, which is nearly $5 more than the previous week.

Analysts with Gas Buddy predicted Monday gas prices would rise further this week.

“Looking ahead, volatility is likely to remain elevated,” Gas Buddy said in a blog post. “With negotiations stalled and restrictions still in place, markets will continue to react quickly to any signs of escalation or renewed diplomatic efforts.

Nationally, a gallon of gas was $4.17 per gallon on Tuesday morning. Washington had the third-highest average in the nation behind California and Hawaii.
