KENT, Wash. — A suspected impaired driver died after a collision with a utility pole following a police pursuit in Kent on Saturday night, according to authorities.

At around 9:21 p.m., a Kent police officer spotted a driver believed to be under the influence in the city’s downtown area and attempted to pull the vehicle over. The driver did not stop and instead accelerated, heading north on Washington Avenue as the officer followed.

Police said the vehicle later went out of control at the intersection of West Valley Highway and South 228th Street, where it struck a utility pole.

Officers arriving at the scene found the driver, a 56-year-old Seattle man, unconscious and trapped inside the vehicle. After breaking the windows to reach him, officers determined he was not breathing and began life-saving efforts. Crews pried open the car doors to remove him, used an automated external defibrillator, and performed CPR until King County medics took over.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

No other vehicles or individuals were involved in the collision.
