PIERCE COUNTY, Wash. — A 19-year-old motorcyclist died in a crash in Pierce County on Saturday afternoon, according to the Washington State Patrol (WSP).
The motorcyclist was driving southbound on state Route 7 at Pilgrim Road near La Grande Reservoir when he “failed to properly negotiate a curve,” drove into the northbound lanes and hit an embankment, WSP said. The 19-year-old died at the scene.
Another motorcyclist traveling north at the same time hit the first motorcycle. The second motorcyclist was not injured.
Both motorcyclists were wearing helmets. WSP said neither drugs nor alcohol were involved in the crash, and that the cause was improper lane use.
Pierce County Fire District 23 crews responded to the scene. The district reminded motorists that this area of state Route 7 is “a popular travel corridor with curves, changing conditions, and limited margin for error. Riders and drivers are urged to reduce speed, maintain control of their vehicles, and operate within their abilities.”
The road was blocked for five hours at troopers investigated.
