Commuters to face delays as a full closure on I-405 in Bellevue coincides with ongoing I-5 work in Seattle, warns the Washington State Department of Transportation.

SEATTLE — Drivers across the eastside and Seattle should prepare for a difficult weekend commute as a major closure on I-405 in Bellevue coincides with ongoing Revive I-5 work in Seattle.

The Washington State Department of Transportation says northbound I-405 will be fully closed between Renton and Bellevue from 11:30 p.m. Friday, April 17, through 4 a.m. Monday, April 20. The closure will stretch from North Southport Drive/Northeast Sunset Boulevard to Coal Creek Parkway Southeast. A signed detour will direct drivers along Coal Creek Parkway Southeast.

WSDOT says crews will use the closure to complete critical work, including excavating drainage crossings, replacing sections of pavement, and shifting traffic as part of a new roadway configuration. The work is part of the I-405 Renton to Bellevue Widening and Express Toll Lanes Project. It will eventually extend the two-lane express toll system between Renton and Lynnwood.

The timing of this closure is expected to amplify congestion across the region. Two northbound lanes of I-5 remain closed over the Ship Canal Bridge in Seattle for ongoing repairs, creating a double impact for drivers who rely on both major corridors.

Transportation officials warn that backups could extend well beyond Bellevue, with heavier traffic expected in both directions along I-405 and increased congestion throughout Seattle. As drivers search for alternate routes, local roads and nearby highways may also see unusual slowdowns.

WSDOT is urging travelers to plan ahead by considering public transit, using park-and-ride options, adjusting travel schedules, and checking real-time traffic conditions before heading out.

Officials also note that the construction work is weather-dependent and could be rescheduled if conditions change.
