SEATTLE — New video obtained by KING 5 through a public records request shows the moment a King County Metro bus crashed into multiple vehicles in Seattle’s Greenwood neighborhood in March.
Police say the bus hit at least seven cars along five blocks during the incident.
Footage from inside the bus captures the chaos as the vehicle shakes from repeated impacts. “Let us off the bus here,” an unidentified speaker says several times. Another voice asks, “Why are we not stopping?” while a passenger checks on the driver, asking, “Are you OK, sir?”
According to Seattle police, the driver suffered a medical emergency. A passenger witnessed the emergency and took control of the bus, pressing the brakes and steering it off the street.
The collisions happened around 11:18 a.m. near 8003 Greenwood Avenue North before the bus came to a stop near North 85th Street, police said.
“I was sitting in the shop, and all of the sudden I saw [out] the window, the bus was coming really fast,” said Cyntia Garcia, who works in a nearby business. “It happened very fast… I jumped up and I was like, ‘Oh my God!’ Everyone was shook.”
“I thought when I called immediately, with how fast it hit, somebody was going to be [seriously] hurt. He was going super fast… I was just amazed and really thankful,” Garcia added.
Seattle fire crews said four people were evaluated after the crashes and no serious injuries were reported.
The bus driver was hospitalized and the passenger who intervened was taken to Harborview as a precaution.
