SEATTLE — A large demonstration shut down traffic Saturday at the intersection of Broadway and East Pine Street in Capitol Hill before protesters marched on downtown’s Henry M. Jackson Federal Building.
The Seattle Department of Transportation advised drivers to avoid the area and use alternate routes as the crowd moved westbound on East Pine Street. A KING 5 reporter on the scene initially estimated about 1,000 people gathered at the Capitol Hill intersection.
The demonstration continued west on Pine Street, passing 9th Ave and blocking east and westbound traffic. Protesters then moved southbound on 2nd Avenue, passing University Street and blocking southbound traffic.
Around 3:30 p.m., a KING 5 reporter said that at least 1,000 people had congregated outside the Henry M. Jackson Federal Building in downtown Seattle.
The majority of the crowds had dispersed by 5 p.m., with SDOT announcing the “all clear” for vehicles on 2nd Avenue and Pine Street.
Authorities initially expected a smaller demonstration tied to educators, but multiple groups converged, forming a larger protest. Signs seen in the crowd included messages calling to abolish Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
