Memorial services for state Trooper Tara-Marysa Guting slated for Saturday

TACOMA, Wash. — A memorial service for fallen Washington State Patrol Trooper Tara-Marysa Guting will be held Saturday in Tacoma.

The memorial will be an “intimate, family-focused service” hosted by state patrol with law enforcement honors for the fallen trooper. The service will not include a processional.

KING 5 will live stream the service beginning at 1 p.m. You can watch the entire service online or on KING 5+.

Guting, 29, was struck by a vehicle while standing outside her patrol vehicle on southbound state Route 509 near Port of Tacoma Road while responding to a collision on Dec. 19. She was thrown into the highway, and struck by another vehicle. The driver who initially hit Guting stayed at the scene and cooperated. Though the second vehicle has been impounded, the driver remains unaccounted for.

Her death marked the 34th such loss in the Washington State Patrol’s 105-year history.

Guting, born July 19, 1996, in Honolulu, Hawaii, began her public service career with her enlistment in the Army National Guard in October 2014. She served for eight years as a Signals Intelligence Analyst, concluding her military service in October 2022.

Guting married her husband, Timothy, in August 2019.

Christopher Govea, a former high school classmate who worked alongside Guting at the YMCA of Honolulu, previously said her commitment to serving others was evident long before she joined the military or the Washington State Patrol. They worked together daily in an afterschool program, caring for elementary-age children.

“She was always someone who was very selfless and always put other people first before herself,” Govea said. “I always saw her as a servant leader.”
