LYNDEN, Wash. — After a pair of rainstorms drenched Whatcom County, the community is turning to blizzards, and other treats, to help expedite flood recovery efforts.
The Lynden Dairy Queen hosted a fundraiser on Tuesday to benefit Whatcom Strong, a county-wide nonprofit that helps coordinate relief efforts for people impacted by disasters.
“We wanted to be there for our community, our Dairy Queen’s here in this area are community focused,” said general manager Ken Welker. “The amount of help that’s out there for people in need is really good and it feels good to be a part of that.”
The local franchisee donated 20% of all sales between 5 to 10 p.m. and also accepted donations of clothing and blankets.
“I have family members and friends that have been affected. It’s really close to all of us. We have a great group of people that are excited about helping. It means a lot,” Welker said.
Some customers learned of the fundraiser as they ordered, others heard about it on social media or through friends.
Heather Treas brought three of her five children.
“Anytime you can get them involved, it’s a good idea,” she said. “I have neighbors directly affected, negatively. We’re all going out doing our holiday things, and I thought it would be an excellent way to connect with people for a good cause.”
“I feel like I’m barely playing a part, just getting a treat, but it’s meaningful,” she added.
It wasn’t immediately known how much money was raised, but the Welker said the crowds were steady.
“They give so much to us year round, we want to give back to them,” he said.
KING 5 activated Northwest Response in partnership with the American Red Cross.
